 Fall 2009 Class Descriptions  

BEGINNING DRAWING AND COMPOSITION (ages 12 and up)

The beginning art class will cover basic design concepts including the use of light and shading. In addition, the student will learn the art perspective as well the art history to illustrate each concept. The student will start by using drawing pencils and then may choose watercolor, pastel or pen & ink mediums to practice each concept and explore their own creative potential in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Week 1: The introduction covers basic drawing, design concepts with practice in shading, and the use of perspective to develop eye hand coordination. The use of light and composition will be discussed as it relates to upcoming projects and their subject matter.

Week 2 & 3: Each student will learn to create a drawing from a picture they would like to draw, or choose from ones provided.

Week 4 & 5: Each student will learn to draw from a still life created in front of them while being introduced to new mediums such as watercolor, pastel and pen & ink.

Week 6, 7, & 8: Each student has the choice of subject matter and will work on a final project in their choice of medium(s).

 

CAKE DECORATING FONDANT ADVANCE

Course to learn how to fill, frost cakes, make flowers, and various decorating techniques using Fondant and Gum paste, Frosting and Royal Icing. Gain confidence and expand your creativity while having fun.

CAKE DECORATING FONDANT BEGINNING

Learn how to work with Fondant and Gum paste, making bows, flowers, and working with molds.

Learn how to cover cakes with fondant. Gain confidence and expand your creativity while having fun.

CLASS SUPPLIES:

  • Fondant 5 lbs: May make your own (recipe of fondant and fillings will be given out the 1 st night of class) or you may purchase pre-made (teacher prefers Satin Ice).
  • Tylos - used to turn fondant into gum paste.
  • Rolling Pins – 1 small and 1 large rolling pin.

Teacher will have other supplies available for students for class use only.

 

DRAWING FROM LIFE

Introduces students to several drawing ideas and techniques that will improve their abilities and skills. The ideas and techniques, also known “tools” will be stretched within an eight-week period. Each week, students will learn a new technique that will be implemented into their drawings. In the end, students will have an array of abilities, helping them create a full composition in their own style; also, students will realize their improvements.

 

The course will focus on the use of pencil on paper – 11” x 14” Sketchpad or bigger. The last class will be an open critique so students could give and receive feedback from other class members

 

OIL PAINTING

Learn how to paint in oils! This class covers all facets of painting in oils.

Learn everything you want to know from what paints to buy and how to mix colors, to what mediums and supports to use. The class will cover the use of lighting and shadowing, the importance of hue, intensity, and value. In addition, each student will be introduced to the history of oil painting and academic art practices that will help them, in every aspect of painting.

 

MATERIALS (estimated cost $50):

  • 11x14 Ampersand Gesso Board
  • 8x10 Fine tooth stretched canvas
  • Oil brushes 1-#2 Round, 1#16 Filbert

Oil Paint 1- Cerulean Blue, 1- Cadmium Red, 1- Canary Yellow, 1-Rawsienna, 1 Raw Umber, 1- Ivory Black, 1-Titanium white.

  • Pad of Strathmore palette paper
  • Palette knife
  • Vine charcoal (soft)
  • Rag (for cleaning off brushes)
  • Rag (for painting technique)
  • Small bottle of dish washing soap

POTTERY – BEGINNING WHEEL AND HANDBUILDING (ALL LEVELS)

Learn to throw on the potter's wheel! Beginning and intermediate students will learn basic wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques for creating bowls, bottles, boxes, vases and other vessels in clay. Basic glaze and under glaze methods will be demonstrated for decorating your work. An open class format allows students to work at their own pace and develop their own style with individual instruction and attention given as needed.

COMPUTER

 

 

GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM GPS

This class will focus mainly on GPS handheld devices. Students will learn the history of GPS as well as how to be efficient in navigation. The class will cover how to mark waypoints and successfully find waypoints or points of interest. It is suggested that all students provide their own GPS unit. It is necessary to be outdoors for portions of this class. There will be some homework assignments.

 

EXCEL 2003

Do you want to learn the basics of using an electronic spreadsheet, learn to input data and add rows and columns do simple calculations, or just be able to create, edit, print, save, and open spreadsheets?

Learn the terminology and capabilities of Excel 2003.

Understand how Excel can facilitate effective data manipulation and presentation.

Attending this course will allow you to:

• Understand how Excel can save you time.

• Understand Excel terminology.

• Move around with in the Excel worksheet.

• Enter information into cells.

• Insert/delete rows and columns.

• Perform calculations.

• Automatically sum a range of cells.

• Open, save, and close workbooks.

• Sort information alphabetically or numerically.

• Move and copy data.

• Undo an action.

• Zoom in on worksheet data.

• Use on-line helps quickly to answer your Excel questions.

Prerequisite Skills:

Comfortable with the Windows environment.

 

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERSINCLUDING VISTA AND WINDOWS 7

This course will present the students with the necessary knowledge to get started in their quest for computer skills. More than just facts and skills, this course will focus on understanding how computers and software programs work. This will make a great foundation for learning more advanced skills down the road. You’ll be familiar with computer terms and concepts, and using Microsoft Windows XP, Introduction to Windows Vista concepts and operations, as well as introduction to PDAs and Blackberrys

You’ll learn lots of great tips to make working with your computer easy and fun!

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007

This course is comprised of eight 2-hour classes.  It is designed for beginners to intermediate placing an emphasis on beginners. Office is comprised of several programs that perform many tasks.  We will discuss all of them. However, only the following programs will be taught in detail. 

  WORD: word processing functions, letter writing, address book, envelopes and labels.

  EXCEL: create spreadsheets

 POWER POINT:  make slide presentations

OUTLOOK/OUT LOOK EXPRESS: writing and managing E-mail

Introduction to Windows Vista concepts and operations, as well as introduction to PDAs and Blackberrys

 

KEYBOARDING AND TYPING CLASS

Tired of the hunt and peck technique? Whether you would like to upgrade your employment skills or simply improve your typing skills. This class will be beneficial to you.

Using software and instruction, we will be looking to enhance your ability to type using a computer keyboard.

Whether you are a computer wizard or a pc novice, sign up now to become more proficient at this most fundamental skill!.

 

Photo EDITING (USING PHOTOSHOP)

This fun 8-week course will introduce students to the basic skills necessary to take and edit digital pictures. Will be covered everything from buying a digital camera to printing your final edited photograph. If you’re interested in becoming a digital wizard, sign up now!

 

QUICKBOOKS

This course is an introduction to QuickBooks. Its main objective is to introduce you to the basic features in QuickBooks and give you an opportunity for hands-on practice. You’ll learn about the types of information you need to track in your business, and you’ll see how to enter that information in QuickBooks. By the time you complete the course, you’ll have a good idea of all that QuickBooks offers. You’ll be familiar with the most common tasks, and you’ll know where to find information about more advanced features . Windows knowledge is at most.

 

COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES

(CLASSES)

 

CREDIT LAB : The High School Credit classes are designed as individualized courses enabling the student to work independently at his/her own speed. Credit classes, with the approval of the guidance department, may be used as a means to raise a student's grade point average for graduation. Students are able to forgive D's and earn credit for F's.

 

GED PROGRAM:The GED (General Education Development) program provides the opportunity for adults to complete formal high school requirements and to achieve a State of Florida High School Diploma. The GED preparatory classes include the five areas of study: writing skills, social studies, science, reading skills and mathematics. Classes run from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Monday thru Thursday.

 

LANGUAGE: The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a program for people that desire to learn the English language. Communication skills and literacy in English are the primary objectives. Students are assessed for English proficiency levels and assigned to the appropriate level of class. Classes will be for citizens, resident aliens, immigrants, refugees, and visa students. Classes are from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Monday thru Wednesday

 

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING

Learn the skills and techniques to successfully manage classroom behavior. Eligibility: A day-to-day substitute is a temporary employee who works on an as needed basis. An official transcript(s) reflecting a minimum of 30 semester hours of college credit is required.

 

WILLS, TRUST AND FINANCE CLASS. (This is a one day: two & ½ HOUR CLASS)

The purpose of this class is to educate the public about the legal implications of dying with or without a Last Will & Testament or dying after having executing a Revocable Living Trust. You will have time to discuss real life cases and the problems that could have been avoided if people had planned otherwise.

 

DANCE

 

BALLROOM AND LATIN DANCE:

Ballroom dancing is one of the "fun-filled" ways to improve your skills on the dance floor and at the same time get lots of exercise. You will learn the basic patterns in Cha Cha, Rumba, Waltz, Fox Trot, Swing, Tango and Merengue. No partner necessary.

 

BEGINNING BELLY DANCE - Age 18 and up:

6:00 - 6:45 p.m.: Learn beginning bellydance moves as well as dance routines. You will work with veils, tambourines and more. You'll learn to do shimmies and more.

 

COUNTRY WESTERN LINE DANCE for Teens & Adults:

7:00 - 7:45 p.m.: You'll learn brand new current day line dances done in the country western clubs.

 

E-Z DANCE for Teens & Adults:

8:00 – 8:45 p. m.: To learn simple line dances those are from the turn-of-the-century, to 1950's rock and roll era to the present. Easy movements and steps done to simple and pleasant songs. Wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes, gym shoes if possible.

 

SALSA DANCING

Passion, Energy, and Excitement embodied in rhythmic movement. Salsa dancing is one of the best forms of exercise. Some of the health and fitness benefits of salsa dancing are: weight loss and muscle gain, boosting your physical endurance and range of motion all while learning the latest salsa dance steps. By using salsa dancing to get fit, you will not only look great, but may provide a reason to get out more and improve your social life. Beginning Salsa dance steps! Step-by-step instruction and detailed foot and hand movements allow the instructor to show you how to look good and stay in step with the music. The Salsa instructor will repeat the instruction several times so that even novice dancers will learn the basic movements of Salsa dancing! Special dance experience that you will remember forever! No partner necessary.

 

ZUMBA FITNESS EXERRCISE WORKOUT

Zumba fitness is a dance-fitness exercise program that motivates its participants by incorporating a party-like atmosphere. Zumba instructors guide their students to follow a combination of dance steps such as salsa, merengue, and reggaetone. Zumba also uses fitness exercises such as squats, knee-lifts, and bicep curls.
Zumba fitness is characterized by "booty-shaking" moves that make people smile, laugh and let loose! Zumba music uses mostly latin rhythms but also uses other upbeat music from calypso to swing.

You can burn 500-800 calories in a one-hour class while at the same time tone muscles and relieve stress.  Zumba is for both men and women, although classes are predominately female! It attracts people of all ages and all nationalities .

 

FITNESS

 

BATON/POM/RIBBONS Beginners 5 – 9 years - Thursdays 5:30 – 6:15 pm. Fist class October 1 st, 8 weeks and the cost is $ 26. (Additional class not advertised in the Community Educator)

A great class that incorporates batons, dance ribbons, pom routines with footwork and teamwork. Routines will be taught for show, stage, parades, and local competitions.

 

BATON/POM/RIBBONS Intermediate 9 – 14 years - Thursdays 6:15 – 7:00 pm. Fist class October 1 st, 8 weeks and the cost is $ 26. (Additional class not advertised in the Community Educator)

 

Class designed for school aged children and those that know basic baton skills. A more advanced class that put tricks together in combinations… tosses, flips, and beginner exchanges. Two baton is introduced, more dance ribbons and poms. They will be working on a parade routine, stage, show and competition routines.

 

CORE YOGA

This class focuses on core strength and stability as well as flexibility of the limbs and spine. Also, there will be instruction on relaxation and meditative breathwork. Students will need a mat, towel and water. Optional accessories include blocks and pillows.

 

FITNESS RESISTANCE TRAINING

This course will concentrate on toning muscles in the body by using resistance bands and light weights (if desired by the student). It will also work on improving flexibility through gentle yoga and increasing core stability with Pilates principles.

The students will need an exercise mat and may bring their own light weights and stability ball.

 

LOW IMPACT AEROBICS:

A great way to improve your fitness level without the worry of strenuous pressure on the joints and muscles. Excellent for people just beginning or starting after some time off. Low impact aerobics is a nice and steady pace focusing on all areas of the body without jumping, one foot will always be one the floor.

This class will combine fat burning, muscle building, and flexibility in a fun atmosphere that will send stress running away and encourage energy to stay within the body.

Your exercise clothing should be light weight to allow freedom of movement. Shoes giving support and cushion to the balls of your feet. Shoes should also slide on the floor but not slip.

Even though low impact aerobics is fun and safe it is always a good idea to have a check-up first before starting with any exercise program.

Please bring a towel and water to class and get ready to have fun!

 

PILATES
Want a flat stomach and stronger muscles. Pilates is the class for you. Strengthen and lengthen all your muscles for a longer, leaner look. Come join this fun new class and make sure to bring your own mat.

 

TENNIS BEGINNERS (Children 8-13)

The children’s tennis course is for ages 8-13 years old and will cover the basic fundamental skills such as forehand and backhand ground strokes, volleys and serves, proper grip, basic scoring, on-court rules, etiquette and sportsmanship conduct. The students will also have an opportunity to play the game: singles and doubles and have fun at the same time.

 

NOTE: Each student MUST have a racquet and NEW can of tennis balls.

 

TENNIS (Adult Beginners)

The Adult beginner tennis course will cover the fundamentals skills, ie. Equipment selection, use of proper grips, forehand and backhand groundstrokes, along with volleys, lobs and serves. In addition, this course will cover basic double positioning, scoring, court rules, and court etiquette. If you want to learn a life-long game, get in some good conditioning and exercise, and have fun, this course is for you.

 

NOTE: Each student MUST have a racquet and NEW can of tennis balls.

 

YOGA

Mental and physical relaxation though steady breathing and deliberate stretching. Some of the health and fitness benefits of yoga are:

  • Weight loss
  • Muscle gain
  • Boosting physical endurance/energy level
  • Health improvements
  • Stress management
  • Enhanced positive moods
  • Posture

You should wear loose and comfortable clothes when you stretch. For best results, yoga classes should be taken in moderation with at least a full daybreak in between. Make sure to bring your own mat.

LANGUAGE

 

SPANISH – (BEGINNING)

This is a class designed for individuals who need practical Survival Spanish skills necessary for business or travel. Emphasis in basic grammar, activities for asking and giving personal information using vocabulary and introduction to verb usage (present tense) will be included in the course content. A Spanish-English dictionary is necessary for the course.

 

SPANISH – INTERMEDIATE

This is a class designed for individuals who need practical Survival Spanish skills necessary for business or travel describing places and their location. A conversational approach to speaking the language in order to communicate. A Spanish-English dictionary is necessary for the course

SPANISH–CONVERSATIONAL (Beginning)
T his is a conversational approach to speaking the language in order to communicate. You need to have the basic elements in Spanish grammar like verb to be (ser o estar), how to ask the correct questions and give the answers, how to use verbs in present, and past tense. A Spanish-English dictionary is necessary for the course

 

TECHNICAL/SKILLED TRADES

 

SEWING

Imagine what you can create with just some basic sewing skills. You will learn terminology on how to read and cut out patterns, insert zippers, blind hem, construct garments and/or home accessories. You should bring your own sewing machine.

 

UPHOLSTERY

Just think how much money you can save and how much fun you will have by reupholstering your own furniture or flea market finds. You will learn basic to intermediate upholstery skills, such as kitchen chairs, ottomans, cornice boards etc., choosing and cutting fabric. Learn how to make and apply piping and insert zippers. You should bring your own sewing machine.
