September 29 - October 2 and October 6-9, 2008 • 5:00pm–8:00pm • Media Center. CLASSES BEGIN the week of October 13, 2008. *Additional materials fee may apply. Classes require a minimum enrollment.

 Fall 2008 Class Descriptions  

DRAWING PORTRAIT:
Easy method: A B C Drawing (beginning). Animal portraits (Intermediate). Life and portrait drawings (Advance and other techniques)
Supplies:
• Sketchbook (drawing pad) 180 gr. 12x18, 11x14 (approximate)
• Pencil #2
• Eraser
• Charcoal - stick soft vine, stick - compressed medium or soft
• Charcoal paper medium, weight 80lbs.

FLORAL DESIGN - BEGINNING
The course will cover the basic principles of floral design including: tools, purchasing and care of fresh flowers, various types of arrangements, and each week students will create a floral arrangement to take home. The fee for supplies is $100. The first half ($50) is due the first night of class and the remaining half ($50) due on the fifth night of class.

FLORAL DESIGN - INTERMEDIATE
This class is a continuation of the fresh floral design class with an emphasis on the following: With emphasis on High style, Party centerpieces, Oriental and Ikebana. The fee for supplies is $175. The $175 supply is due on the following installments: April 6, 2005 ($75), April 27, 2005 ($50), and May 17, 2005 ($50)

WATERCOLOR, BEGINNING
Learn the history and technique of watercolor. Class will cover landscape, seascape, still life and human/animal expression. Also will explore oriental technique in watercolor, Chinese and Japanese. Supplies needed for this class: Watercolor paper Archers (hot pressed 140lb). Palette colors (watercolor). Plastic palette to mix colors. Brushes: No 0 - No 2 - No 4 - No 12 sable for larger areas. Flat synthetic brush for lifting color. Fan shaped brush for special effect. Pencil (watercolor). Eraser (regular or electric). Gator board to hold paper when you stretch. Stretching tape. Masking fluid (painted passage without lifting the pigment). Sponge. Paper towel and white wax stick.

COMPUTER
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP - BEGINNING
Adobe Photoshop 6.0 provides powerful, industry standard image-editing tools for anyone who wants to produce sophisticated graphics for print and the web. It also contains the tools and commands for improving the quality of a photograph's image from acquisition and resizing through retouching. This course helps you learn the basic features of Photoshop quickly and easily through hands-on instruction. Should have a working knowledge of the PC. In addition to knowing how to open, save, and close files, you must know how to use the mouse and standard menus and commands in the Windows or Mac environment.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP - ELEMENTS 3.0
Intermediate Photoshop will start with a refresher of the basic skills in Photoshop. Students should be familiar and own copies of the Photoshop program. Students should have access to a computer at home to work with photographs and be able to bring digital copies to class for discussion. Class will include photo manipulation, scanning, use of layers, using filters, channels and masks, editing and retouching, reproducing color accurately, automating tasks and printing.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
To instruct each participant in the functional use of computer software and hardware and its integration in the home. This course is for the computer novice. This will be a class that will get participants involved in the world of computers. The following topics will be covered: parts of the computer, how a computer works, types of computers, Windows 95/98, "mousing" skills and computer terminology.

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT OFFICE
To learn the basics of the programs of Microsoft's Office Suite - Word (processing), PowerPoint (presentation), Excel (spreadsheets), Access (database), and Outlook.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING (VISUAL BASIC 6)
Write programs using Visual Basic 6, a language used by Microsoft to create many of its Windows products. The course covers concepts as well as practical examples and exercises. Visual Basic, used by 3.1 million programmers, is one of the few computer languages that are not only enjoyable, but also easy to learn. If you are new to programming, or have never programmed in Visual Basic, this course is for you.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Class will explore the art of digital photography from capture to print. We will examine Composition, Exposure, and Photo Manipulation using Photoshop, File Sizes, and Printing. Students should have basic computer knowledge and own a digital camera. Weekly assignments will include shooting and bringing copies of the digital images to class for discussion.

DREAMWEAVER
This class covers introductory through intermediate techniques in web-design using Dreamweaver 4.0. It will also provide an overview of site design. Emphasis will be placed on creative use of tools in Dreamweaver. Students should have familiarity with the basics of PC operation, including using the mouse and saving files. This course is targeted at students who wish to create HTML materials that can be used in developing web sites.

MICROSOFT WORD 2000
Introductory word processing course will teach editing, formatting desktop publishing, borders and shading, cut and paste, and almost everything that you will find on the tool bar.

DANCE
SOCIAL DANCING
Social dancing is one of the "fun-filled" ways to improve your skills on the dance floor and at the same time get lots of exercise. You will learn the basic patterns in Cha Cha, Rumba, Waltz, Fox Trot, Swing, Tango and Meringue.

LINE DANCING (BEGINNER)
Learn all the favorite dances, step by step and have fun while doing it.

LINE DANCING (INTERMEDIATE)
Learn all the favorite dances, step by step and have fun while doing it.

SWING, SALSA & HUSTLE (Beg.)
This is a basic Latin dance class focusing primarily on the Salsa and the ever-popular Swing. The Hustle will be covered, time permitting.

DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINING
All 4 levels of dog obedience use the praise method of positive reinforcement. The snap/jerk method is NOT used. Emphasis on a learning method using attention, focus bonding, and a team working out of love.

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN
(For dogs UNDER 6 months with no prior training.)
Puppies from 7 weeks to 6 months are taught manners, socialization with people and other puppies, sit/down stay, controlled walking on a leash, coming when called, and stand. Additional areas are addressed including mouthing, barking, housebreaking, digging, chewing, grooming, care, feeding, destruction, and other individual concerns. A mandatory 6-foot cotton-web training leash and nylon buckle collar is required. Puppy Kindergarten teaches the handler how to train a puppy to be a valued family member.

BASIC HOME OBEDIENCE
(For dogs OVER 6 months that are Puppy Kindergarten graduates OR dogs with no prior training.)
Any dog regardless of age can be trained. Yes, you can teach an old dog new trick. Basic Home obedience is for beginning obedience -sit, down, recall, heeling, stand, beginning jumping, and socialization. The class is designed for both the person who wants good home behavior, and the class lays the foundation for AKC obedience competitors as well.
A mandatory 6-foot cotton-web-training leash and metal collar is required. Basic Home Obedience is a must for every dog.
BEYOND BASIC OBEDIENCE (WITH TEACHER APPROVAL ONLY)
(For dogs that have SUCCESSFULLY completed a Basic Obedience class where the praise method was taught) Dogs in Beyond Basic should have a solid foundation in the skills listed above in Basic Home Obedience. Dogs should be ready to be worked off leash. Skills include novice, open, and utility, although techniques taught are appropriate for polishing the dog for better home control without intent to show. Screening is done on the first evening by the instructor to assure the fundamentals have been mastered to meet the objectives.

INTERMEDIATE OBEDIENCE
(For dogs over 6 months who have SUCCESSFULLY completed a Basic Obedience class where the praise method was taught) at the intermediate level, skills will be polished in preparation for the off-lead work *stressed in Beyond Basic. Finishes will be taught as well as hand signals and special handling techniques. Intermediate Obedience is for the dog that is not quite ready for Beyond Basic, but has mastered the skills taught in basic Home obedience. A flexi-line is additional equipment needed at this level.

FITNESS
Pilates
Want flat stomach and stronger muscles? Pilates is the class for you. Strengthen and lengthen all your muscles for a longer, leaner look. Come join this fun new class make sure to bring your own mat.

Total Body Conditioning
A total of 30/40 minutes of step combination movement to music followed by upper/lower body weight, abs training and cool down.

YOGA - GENTLE/MODERATE
This class is oriented for those new to yoga and for those who prefer a gentle to moderate regimen of yoga positions. The class is designed to help reduce stress and promote relaxation as well as gradually improving flexibility, strength, and balance. A few loaner yoga mats are available from the instructor, but it's recommended that you purchase one before the first class.

YOGA-INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
This class is oriented for those who are in good physical condition, who are at least moderately flexible. Expect a somewhat rigorous workout challenging your flexibility and strength, balance and concentration. Yoga experience is recommended. Bring your sticky mat.

LANGUAGE
CHINESE (BEGINNING) this is a conversational, mandarin - Chinese language course. No pre - knowledge is needed.

ITALIAN - CONVERSATIONAL (BEGINNER)
This is a conversational approach to speaking the language in order to communicate. An Italian-English dictionary is necessary for the course.

ITALIAN - CONVERSATIONAL (INTERMEDIATE)
Is the continuation of basic conversational Italian with increased emphasis on grammar, practiced through every day conversational situations?

ITALIAN - CONVERSATIONAL (ADVANCED)
This is a continuation of the Italian (Int) class. A conversational approach to speaking the language in order to communicate. An Italian-English dictionary is necessary for the course.

ENGLISH - CONVERSATIONAL (ADVANCED)
This class is designed for advanced level students of English as a second or foreign language to develop strategic skills that help the student maintain a conversation while improving grammar, vocabulary and usage.

MUSIC
PIANO - BEGINNING (12 YRS OLD OR OLDER)
This is a chance to finally learn how to play the piano or improve your skills. Classes will be in small group sessions with this dynamic teacher. Each person will use a separate keyboard during class. A book may be purchased from the instructor for 15.50 the first night of class.

PIANO - INTERMEDIATE
This is a continuation of piano beginning. Classes will be in small group sessions with this dynamic teacher. Each person will use a separate keyboard during class. A piano book is required the first night of class and may be purchased from the instructor for $15.50, as an additional cost. 12 YEARS OLD OR OLDER. KEYBOARD OR PIANO REQUIRED AT HOME.

PIANO - INTERMIDATE/ ADVANCE
This is a continuation of piano intermediate. Classes will be in small group sessions with this dynamic teacher. Each person will use a separate keyboard during class. PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL GROWTH.
Meditation, Energy and Healing Basics
This class will include breathing techniques, visualization and also physical relaxation techniques. Each week the class will experience a different form of meditation. Progressive relaxation, visualization, proper breathing techniques, creating positive thoughts, mind/body connection, color and sound, aromatherapy, sensing energy.

Pronunciation & Accent Reduction
This class provides students whose native language is other than English with an opportunity to improve the accuracy of their American English pronunciation, stress and intonation. Through presentation and practice, students will learn strategies for improving the clarity of their speech and English language usage. Recommended for students with at least a fairly good (conversational) understanding of English.
